Tips to combat mold in the house

  • Keep them separate. If you suspect mold, try to hire one company to do the testing and the another to remediate it to eliminate any conflict of interest. It's also best if an independent lab test the mold samples.
  • Run the dehumidifier. Basements and crawl spaces tend to be damp, but a working dehumidifier should reduce extra moisture. Some include an alert monitor so you can track the humidity from inside your home and address high levels before it becomes a problem.
  • Check with you insurance company. Some policies offer limited coverage fro mold damage under certain circumstances, and some offer no coverage. Remediation expenses can add up, so make sure you know what's included in you homeowners insurance policy.
  • Ready to finish the basement? Hire a highly rated waterproofing company to inspect the area before you install drywall. Fixing moisture problems before remodeling the basement will save you the trouble and expense of ripping down moldy walls later.
